iPhone No Sound Problem/ Issues Steps and Solutions
If you have no sound on your iPhone volume bar it is unbelievably frustrating as you most probably already know. I have been looking for cures over the web there are many out there, below you will find a list of all these including the one that worked for me. Also the list is in chronological order of what seems to be most successful. It is a process of elimination but it has to be done.
The symptoms of iPhone no sound Problem/ Issues include:
- iPhone will ring but speaker will not work for anything else.
- iPhone no sound at all for calls, apps, music etc
- iPhone no sound as stuck in headphone mode
Follow these steps and hopefully your iPhone will be back to its prior glory.
iPhone No Sound Step 1,
Loud/ Silent switch on exterior of iPhone is switched to silent mode which is orange. If so flick the other way to loud mode. This is a step that so many people miss, but it is the most simplest.
iPhone No Sound Step 2,
Restart the iPhone. Hold the power switch and home button together for 10 seconds. This will restart your iPhone, you wil not lose any media, contacts, data, etc. If there is a temporary glitch on the iPhone this will eliminate that glitch.
iPhone No Sound Step 3,
Reset iPhone. Go to settings> general> reset> reset all settings. Make sure to backup your iPhone to the cloud / iTunes as this will wipe your media, music and apps although photos will be left on the iPhone. This is a follow on to step 2 and another way you will be able to eliminate the glitch on the iPhone.
iPhone No Sound Step 4,
This one is a bit weird but it worked for me for a while and has worked successfully for other people. Squeeze the bottom right hand corner of the phone above where the speaker is. The left Side is a mic not a speaker so don’t worry about that side. Hold that grip for about 20 seconds. This is done as the connector may be loose and had to be repositioned correctly. Yes strange but most of these solutions are.
iPhone No Sound Step 5,
Use a tooth brush to clean the docking area where you charge your iPhone. With dirt, dust, grime and so on it may block the connectors working correctly and makes the phone think it is on a music dock. When you do this do it gently and get the bristles into there good. Also if you use rubbing alcohol, acetone or methylated spirits it will help get all the extra dirt out. As these products evaporate it will not do damage to the connectors. Do not use mineral terps when cleaning as it is oil based and will not dry!! This seems to be one of the most successful solutions.
iPhone No Sound Step 6,
Get your headphones and insert them into the headphone jack. Do this for a couple of minutes as sometimes it gets stuck in headphone mode so this normally undoes that.
iPhone No Sound Step 7,
Restore your iPhone on iTunes. Click on your iPhone icon when plugged into iTunes and go to restore. If you do this make sure your iPhone is backed up as YOU will loose all data, media, contacts, pics, and so on. This puts your iPhone back to factory settings.
iPhone No Sound Step 8,
Jailbreak your iPhone to find the file directories that are causing the fault. By doing this you are deleting the file that is making the iPhone think it is on a dock. You will still be able to use music docking station etc. If you have a jail broken iPhone or willing to do it then this will be the best option for you. Very simple video and easy to follow, to jailbreak follow my simple tutorial.
iPhone No Sound Step 9,
This worked for me!! The squeezing step worked for me for a small amount of time. Not much else worked so thought I would try my own cure…. An old hair dryer!! Turn on low heat and hover over the speaker outlet for about 5 minutes. I also did the headphone jack as well. There must of been some residual moisture build up which the hair dryer eliminated:)
iPhone No Sound Step 10,
It may be a hardware problem and simply need to get a replacement through your provider or apple support.
iPhone No Sound Step 11,
If iPhone still has no sound there is always ultimate elimination… Not endorsed. See below….
These are just the steps I have found which have shown success for people with iPhones with no sound. If you have another ideas or anything I missed please post as it all helps. If any of these have worked for you please share how you did it. Hope this helps.

This was very helpful, thank you!
My son’s phone lost music and text tone only. Where the ringer slider is located there was only dotted line
I used hair dryer method and then noticed a dock connector symbol where dotted line was so then used toothbrush/alcohol method. One swipe and it was perfect. Thanks again!

Hey,
my iPhone 4 started to have this weird problem when no sound works; no ringtones, no message signals, spotify/music and videos won’t even start playing (as in counting the time elapsed, I cannot press play at all). This problem appears on videos on youtube as well as on videos saved on the phone. The wierd thing is that when I restart the phone the problem is gone for a few days, but then it has appeared again, usually after taking the charger out in the morning. If it’s a problem with dirt in the docking area, would that affect videos and music in this way? I would like to find a more long term solution than having to reboot the phone every time it does this. Any one experienced this? Thankful for help!

Squeezing the lower right hand corner of my iphone 5 worked! There was no sound working via the ear piece and when I tried to play music could not hear it via the speaker only thru the headphones. Also I could not hear Siri. Squeezing the lower right corner seemed to work.

Very Interesting….I too find it annoying that I have no audio apart from the ring tone, and also with head piece attached; but hey, I want to know when I get an email or message! One thing though, I discovered that by placing the iphone 4s into an ipod dock, the volume bar returns! Go into any large retail store selling audio equipment and try it out for yourself. The volume bar sadly disappears within a short time of removing the iphone from the dock. I think that there may be a problem with some cheap imported docking stations so best thing is to not dock your phone into docks….I am still trying to find a sloution. GREG

iPhone 5 blk 16g AT&T .. Had same issue first day … Would not ring, no external sounds. Tried qtip, paper clip etc… After that .. It worked. Day 2 .. Had 1 or 2 glitches … Since then it’s worked perfectly. I subscribe to the theory of moisture (or acclimation or whatever) … Think the device just needed a little time and usage (ie plug/unplug) to settle. After 5 days I am no longer freaking out and the phone is running smoothly. Do I’d say follow these steps and give it a few days … Just be aware of your return deadlines if you’re still having problems.

OMG YOU are heaven-sent! I have been SO frustrated (as we all are when this happens lol). My phone would ring, but no alerts, notifications nor could I play music or apps.
I went through EVERY step up to #7. What finally worked was cleaning the docking area with rubbing alcohol and toothbrush, then put warm dryer on the docking and speaker area for a little over 5 minutes.
VOILA! It works again. Thank you Thank you Thank you for posting this, you have helped me and so many others.

As soon as I started doing this steps, I was out of hope, #1 didnt work, #2 didnt work, #3 didnt work.
I thought I have to go to a service for a fix, and I had no money atm, and then, a LAST chance, #9 HELPED ME OUT.
I WAS SO HAPPY, THANKS!!!
P.S.
I DIDNT TURN ON THE HEAT, IT WAS ON ZERO, AND DID IT WITH A COLD AIR FOR LIKE 15 SECONDS AND IT WORKED!

I have had this problem for 3 days, iPhone 4S thinking it was docked all the time. I tried docking it to see if it would bring the volume bar back. that didnt work. But then I tried plugging my ipad card reader in whilst playing music( but with no sound). The volume bar appeared and it started playing.I pulled the card reader out and it played music with the volume bar for about 15 seconds then cut off and seemed to think it was docked again.I tried it agian and it has worked!! My phone is fixed. strange but there’s another way for everyone to try. The card reader was off eBay for a £5
