Vizio TV No Sound – How to fix (9 Tips)
1. Ensure that the remote controller is working
A problem with the remote might make you think there is a problem with the TV. It could be that the TV is working fine but the remote is faulty. Use the power button on the side of the TV determine if the problem is caused by the remote.
2. Ensure that the television has not been set to mute
We are going to start with basic troubleshooting tips, so bear with us.Â
First, check if the television has been muted. Go to the audio settings and see what the mute status is. It should be turned off.Â
3. Ensure the television volume is set above zero or that it is not muted
After you have affirmed that the television is not muted, you need to make sure that the television volume has been set above zero. Once you have raised the television volume and still there is no audio response then move on to the next tip.
4. Check that the HDMI cable is working properly
If your television is connected to an external device with an HDMI cable and the video is being displayed but there is no sound, then one possibility is that you are using a faulty HDMI cable. The HDMI cable assists your television in receiving the signals from these devices.
These signals come in video and audio encodings. Sometimes a problem with the audio encoding can cause the television to fail at outputting sound at all. This may not be a television problem but a problem with the cable. To diagnose the faultiness of the HDMI cable by replacing the cable with a new one.
5. Check the settings of the Satellite Box for above zero volume
If you are using Cable or Satellite Box, then you need to operate the settings of that interface to make sure that the volume has been set to above zero.
This may seem rare especially if you do not have enough experience with television settings but essentially in this scenario, your cable box is providing the video and the audio signals that are then being outputted through the television.
If the volume on your cable box is zero then your cable box is instructing your television not to output any sound.Â
6. Check the television for SAP
Okay, so the SAP stands for Secondary Audio Programming. It is a feature that many TV shows include their non-English-speaking audience.
SAP is essentially a second audio stream included with the TV show that lets you listen to the show in a language other than the original. If you’d rather listen to the TV show in the original language, it is not that difficult to turn off SAP.
Turn on your Vizio TV and press the “Menu” button on your remote. Then select the “Audio” (or similarly titled) menu from the list of available options. Then select the “SAP” option (it may also be labeled “MS”). Change the setting from “On” to “Off.” You might instead have to select “Stereo” or “Mono” from a list of sound options, one of which will be SAP.
7. Check if a headphone has been left attached to the headphone port
This is a weird idea but one that is likely and so we will mention it here. Make sure that your headphone port is not connected to any headphones.
You may have left a headphone lying around which was connected to your television all this time. This connection disables the main sound system of your television as sound signals are being transported only to the headset. So, make sure that you remove these headset connections and test your television sound once again.
8. In case of an external audio system, check settings
In case your television is connected to an external device, follow these steps:
The volume control of the external audio system is set above zero.
The external audio system is not muted.
All of the cables physically connected to the Vizio TV and the audio device are secure.
9. Switch to a different sound input device
Switch to a different input device and see if there is sound (for example, a DVD player or a gaming console). Turn on the other device and then use the INPUT button on the remote to change to that device. (Cable, Cable Box, DVD player, etc).
Then attempt to play a DVD or game to determine if the speakers produce sound. If you do not have another device, and your Vizio TV is a VIA Smart TV you can test with any video application.
10. Use External Speakers
If until this point you were using built-in speakers of the television, then you should consider connecting your television to an external set of speakers using the audio cables.
Tune in on a channel and observe if any sound is coming out of the television. If no sound is being emitted then at this point, we can make an estimated logical conclusion that something is wrong that with the sound card of your television which now requires a proper repairing job from one of the customer care centers of Vizio.
These troubleshooting tips are designed to help you diagnose, basic to complex levels, the problems that you may encounter operating your television audio system correctly.
If these tips fail, we suggest that something may be wrong with your television’s sound card (maybe a faulty circuit) and so we recommend that you call their helpline and get a repair job appointment from their staff.

Switch to a different sound input device:
When I play Kodi via my Nvidia shield, sometimes after a number of minutes the sound quits as if I’d hit a global mute buttion. But if I then switch to another input source (my Fios STB for live TV) sound returns. Then I switch back to the Nvidia Shield and Kodi, the sound has miraculously returned. Seems like an HDMI audio failure although my HDMI video still plays, albeit silently.
