In this tutorial, I will show you how to fix the iPhone X won’t turn off issue in no time at all.
Some other issues you may be encountering is that your iPhone has frozen and has become unresponsive. Which means you can’t turn it off.
Below are 7 fixes that will work for all models including the iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone X Man and iPhone XR.
iPhone X Wont Turn Off/ Frozen – Fixes & Solutions (7 Tips)
1. Turning Off The iPhone X Is Different From Later Models
If you have being trying todo the traditional method of pressing and holing down the sleep/wake button to turn off your iPhone X. This is actually not the case for this newer model of the iPhone X.
To turn off, you will now instead need to press the volume down button and the sleep/wake button together until you are promoted to turn off the device.
This change is because the sleep/wake button has now been reassigned for Siri, SOS and ApplePay for the iPhone X.
2. Restart iPhone X If Device Is Frozen
If your iPhone X has frozen and not responding to any commands, then this is a sure fire solution.
To begin, quickly press the volume up button for 1 second. Once, done, quickly do the same for the volume down button.
After this, then press and hold onto the sleep/wake button for 20 seconds or until the Apple logo appears. If the logo does appear, this means you have successfully restarted your iPhone X.
This step is done to remove any temporary software glitches that may have occurred. This restart will also NOT delete any of your data.
3. Shutdown Via iPhone Settings
If the above methods did not work, you can still turn off your iPhone X within the settings of the phone itself. This can be done by going to Settings > General > Shutdown (located down the bottom of the screen).
As a side note, if your iPhone X is functioning correctly, see if the volume buttons or silent switch is working. You will see a screen appear if you make volume changes.
If you don’t see any changes on the screen, there may be some issues with your iPhone X buttons (more on that below).

4. Use Assistive Touch To Turn Off
For an extra step, you can actually turn off your iPhone X using assistive touch if your buttons are failing to work.
To access assistive touch, you can do this by going to Settings > General > Accessibility > Assistive Touch. Once you have activated Assistive Touch, a new screen will appear on your iPhone X which you can move around and access settings from.
From there, you can simply press and hold onto the Device Button. You will then be prompted to turn off your iPhone X.
5. Check Buttons On Your iPhone X
If your iPhone still won’t turn off, there is a possibility that both your screen and tactile buttons may be malfunctioning. If this is the case for the buttons, there is a possibility that there may be some dirt built up preventing the buttons from functioning.
To try and fix this, you can blow into both the volume and power button to try and dislodge any dust and dirt.
6. Reset Your iPhone X Settings
For a more brut force approach, you can reset all iPhone X settings to try and resolve this issue. While this is a more drastic approach, there have been some cases where this does seem to work.
To reset all settings, you can do this by going into Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. As a side note, this will not delete any data on your phone, but will delete any personal settings you may have applied.
7. Delete Any New Apps
While this is a strange fix, there are have several reports where downloading a new app might actually cause your iPhone X not to turn off.
To delete any apps, simply press and hold until they start jiggling around. From there, you can simple press on the X to delete.
7. Visit Your Local Apple Store
As iPhone X smartphones are relatively new, your device might still be under the included Apple warranty if none of these iPhone X not turning off fixes are working.
Typically a warranty lasts 2 years under Apple, so if any other issues do arise, you can also take your iPhone into the Apple Store to be replace or repaired.
8. Ultime Destruction
If your iPhone still won’t turn off, there is another way of getting it to turn off, and this is by blending it! Not recommended.
